The Ch'p to my G'nort, fellow Astorian and nerd Rick Marshall at MTV SplashPage scored a solid exclusive today by debuting a line-up of some of awesome space cops we'll be seeing in Green Lantern. You can see it here in high-res.
In addition to Tomar-Re, Kilowog and Sinestro who've been seen in their own character one-sheets, now's the time for super deep cut nerds to (and I believe this is the medical term) squee to their heart's content.
If you don't know who some of these emerald warriors are, let's go from left to right and make an introduciton.
Boodikka: A tough-cookie from the planet Bellatix. She first appeared in Volume 3 of the GL series. (The current comics run is Volume 4. Volume 1 is the really old school Golden Age stuff with Alan Scott, Volume 2 is the cheesy-but-fun Silver Age stuff that introduced Hal Jordan, The Guardians, Sinestro and Qward.) In the current storyline Boodika is one of the half-biological, half-mechanical Alpha Lanterns used (improperly?) by the Guardians to self-police the Universe's police force. Prior to this she was one of the Lanterns kept in a half-dead state of suspended animation by the Manhunters after Hal Jordan went bananas as Parallax. But. . .really. . .for the sake of this movie, all you'll probably need to know is that she is totally badass (Tricia Helfer voiced her in the Green Lantern: First Flight animated film) and has purplish skin.
Lin Canar: A GLC member from the ocean planet of Fluvian. Credit to DailyBlam's Pietro Filipponi for naming this one. I admit was stumped.
Ngila Grnt: Another one impossible to name, this is a NEW Lantern. The name is a tip of the hat to the film's costume designer Ngila Dickson and production designer Grant Major, both of whom I met on the set visit I had of Green Lantern. So don't kick yourself if you didn't recognize this one.
Stel: The mighty robotic Stel has been a fan favorite since the early 1960s. Stel was initially thought killed during the Crisis on Infinite Earths, but you can't keep a good sentient machine down. He's been a major player in recent events like the Sinestro Corps War and Blackest Night. I did not know 'til today that Stel was in the movie and I couldn't be more thrilled - Stel was one of the Lanterns we most wanted to see when the movie was first announced.
Abin Sur: The Lantern from Sector 2814 whose untimely death (in the film, by "the Parallax Entity," but there are multiple versions of this) leads to the Power Ring finding Hal Jordan. (And Guy Gardner, but let's not get into all that.) Abin Sur is the Yin to his best comrade Sinestro's yang - he represents Goodness, but Order at any price.
Hal Jordan: Test pilot from Coast City turned Space Cop. Maybe a little on the square side. Hardcore GL fans are already huffing and puffing that Ryan Reynolds is playing his a little too "Captain Kirk-y" but I think he's gonna' be great.
Kilowog: Remember the drill seargant from Full Metal Jacket? Now imagine him as a giant beast from Bolovax Vik!
Tomar-Re: Ah, the noble Tomar-Re. The GLC's intellectual light, he was the first WTF alien introduced in GL comics back in the early 1960s. The famed chicken-fish Xudarian scientist died a while back (his legacy lives on in Tomar-Tu!) but he was revived during Blackest Night. Methinks that once the Brightest Day arc is done we'll see him back on his webbed feet again. Tomar-Re is being voiced by Geoffrey Rush in the film, so it is unlikely that Hal Jordan will stutter.
Penelops: There are a lot of eyeball creatures in the Corps. That's why we love it. The film version breaks a wee bit with canon by making Penelops long and skinny with buglike legs, but we're not complaining.
Sinestro: Hal Jordan's Korugarian mentor and the best Lantern in the Corps. He really likes law and order, though, and he'll take it too far when he forms a faction Corps based not on Will but on Fear. That's assuming the sequel gets (ahem) yellow-lit.
R'amey Holl: Here's another deep cut we called for way back when. This butterfly-like alien from Pappillox, she is also a telepath and was once a member of the black-ops team known as the Green Lantern "Corpse."
G'hu: G'hu is a favorite of Salaak, who is something of a Chief of Staff on behalf of the Guardians. G'hu aids in guarding the Sciencells, which is the Lanterns' prison system and Morro the Cryptkeeper.
Today's reveal leaves us, however, with three key questions:
Where is Green Man?
Where is Isamot Kol?
Where oh where is Rot-Lop-Fan?
We ask this not because we are insatiable fanboys who always want more (though we are.) We ask because there are collectables for these three that have already been announced, so we know they're in the movie. Could it be that there are MORE character posters in the works?
