I'd hardly be alone in claiming that The Monster Squad was one of my favorite genre films growing up, a
kind of primer for my soon-to-be obsession with horror. It had charm; it had
wit; it was "meta" in the days preceding Buffy
the Vampire Slayer or Scream...But
most of all, it was about the most classic of all monsters at a time when those
monsters still held some mystery.
Today, however, in the post-Freddy, post-Jason universe,
I've often wondered if the movie would still play...And apparently, we're about to find out. According to Deadline
Hollywood, a Monster Squad remake is
currently in the works over at Platinum Dunes under the supervision of Michael
Bay, Brad Fuller and Andrew Form. Director Rob Cohen, who produced the original
film, is apparently interested in talking the helm on the proposed remake.
And over at Ain't It Cool News, director Fred Dekker, who
co-wrote the first film with writer Shane Black, had this to say about the
project:
It'd be one thing if
another filmmaker wanted to soil my sandbox... but if it weren't for Rob Cohen,
the original movie would never have been made. So I don't begrudge him wanting
to play in his own sandbox. I wish him well, and thank him for the opportunity
he gave me in the first place.
What do you think? Can it work? Chime in below and let us
know your thoughts!
