How do you bring a Norse thunder god, a 1930s super solider, a playboy millionaire with a knack for technological innovation and twelve-foot-tall green monster all into the same movie and make it believable?
Have them fighting off space aliens, naturally.
According to ComicBookMovie.com, several close sources have confirmed that Marvel's infamous alien race, the Skrulls, will behind the villainy of their 2012 tentpole The Avengers. Gone is the original comic arc that brought The Avengers together - a storyline involving Loki mindcontrolling The Hulk into causing various forms of destruction - replaced by a similar plotline involving the shapeshifting Skrulls...taking over...the Hulk.
OK, not that different, but now we get to watch Thor, Captain America and Iron Man squash green spacemen!
The article goes on to suggest that the Skrulls will play a more S.H.I.E.L.D.-like role, acting as puppeteers rather than a front and center invasion. Can you already smell the sequel?
As if that reveal wasn't enough, the ComicBookMovie also suggests that the movie will feature the Kree, an alien race who will aid The Avengers.
Approximate running time? Eight hours.
Can the Joss Whedon/Zak Penn script really deliver all of that (and a bag of chips)? Who knows, it's all rumors at this point. Either way, expect The Avengers to be big, big, big.
