Of all the fake trailers in Grindhouse, the best was probably the one for Machete, featuring Robert Rodriguez regular Danny Trejo as a scorned Mexican out for bloody, explosive revenge all over the damn place. Rodriguez and Trejo must've gotten drunk together a few more times after shooting the trailer, because now it's been expanded into a real feature film. Machete follows Rodriguez's fascination with the grind house motif, complete with a poster that comes already creased, torn and faded.
What's most impressive about Machete - other than the sheer outrageousness of its own existence - is the cast. Rodriguez has a knack for gathering impressive and seemingly random ensembles, and Machete is no different. Both Trejo and Jeff Fahey, as a political spin doctor, reprise their roles from the trailer - the feature film has the additions of Steven Seagal as a drug lord, Robert De Niro as a corrupt senator, Michelle Rodriguez as a sexy taco slinger, Lindsay Lohan as a gun-toting socialite and Jessica Alba as an ICE agent tracking down the angry Mexican. You also get Cheech Marin, Don Johnson, Rose McGowan and Rodriguez's Spy Kids pal Daryl Sabara, all grown up now... and ready to KICK ASS.
Like Grindhouse before it, Machete is set for a mid-April release, this time from FOX (who's making Rodriguez feel at home by releasing his Predators as well).
Feel its deadly Mexican sting!
