Today's new trailer to see is for Doug Liman's aci-fi actioner Jumper, the tale of a young man born with the ability to teleport and how he uses it to get ahead. Starring Gen Y's Darth Vader, Hayden Christensen, as the jumper and Samuel L. Jackson as a intimidating government agent (no sorry Star Wars fans, Sam isn't playing the ghost of Mace Windu out to get some Jedi vengeance), the film is slated for a February 15, 2008 opening.
The big reason to care about Jumper is director Doug Liman. So far the guy has given us two great action films for the '00s, The Bourne Identity, Mr. & Mrs. Smith, as well as two terrific dramas from the late '90s, Swingers and Go. I read the Jumper novel something like ten years ago and while it was a terrific idea (a real world examination of someone with the ability to teleport) the actual main storyline was pretty formulaic. Judging from what I've seen in the trailer it looks like some of the dullness in the Jumper novel has been jettisoned and the movie takes the concept and seems to run further with it. For example, in the novel there were no other jumpers that the main character discovered; in the trailer there's at least one more dude that can do the same thing as our hero can. What I'm hoping that Liman has done is rev things up just like he did with Bourne and the Smiths.
