After Resident Evil: Afterlife brought in a worldwide first-weekend haul of close to $75 million,
star Milla Jovovich has announced to Vulture that she and her husband Paul W.S.
Anderson will definitely be making a fifth entry in their zombie horror
franchise.
Says Jovovich, "We've been talking to a lot of fans on
Twitter and stuff, so it's probably going to be one of the first movies where
we really talk to fans to see what they want, and what characters they want to
see. It's going to be a more interactive process."
No offense to fanboys, but interacting with fans for
creative advice is the kind of idea that should terrify rather than excite. The
greatest aspect of being told a story is that you are NOT in control of it,
thus leaving way for elements like, oh, I dunno, surprise, suspense, those
pesky things. In an era where the internet is
holding more and more sway over which films are put into production and who
makes them, it might behoove true movie fans to simply demand the
unexpected, as great showmen like Christopher Nolan and J.J. Abrams have tried to do in shrouding their projects in secrecy.
That's a rather ironic statement on a site that makes its
bread and butter feeding movie fans as much information about a film in advance
as possible, something I am just as guilty of indulging in reading as the next
geek. Perhaps a superior writer could phrase it better...
"It is not the job of artists to give the audience what the
audience wants. If the audience knew what they needed, then they wouldn't be
the audience. They would be the artist." - Alan Moore
