The Star Wars and DC Universes have collided!
According to the Heat Vision Blog, production is currently
ramping up in New Orleans on Green
Lantern and some major pieces of casting fall into place: Temuera Morrison and Taika Waititi.
"Waititi plays the best
friend of Hal Jordan, the test pilot who comes to wear the super-powered ring
of the interplanetary police force known as the Green Lantern Corps...Morrison is
playing Abin Sur, a member of the Corps who is instrumental in Jordan becoming
the superhero."
Waititi gained some notoriety for his film Eagle vs. Shark and has directed a
number of episodes of Flight of the
Conchords, while Morrison, best known for playing Jango Fett in the Star Wars prequels, has currently wrapped
production on Tracker with Ray
Winstone.
We're not sure what to make of the "friend" character, but Abin Sur was really the last bit of the puzzle for Green Lantern. Abin Sur is responsible for Hal Jordan's recruitment into the Green Lantern Corps. While Abin Sur teams up with Jordan in later arcs in the series, he intially meets the title character after crash-landing on Earth after a battle with Legion. Injured and facing an almost certain death, Abin Sur uses the ring to seek out a replacement and draws Jordan into the story.
At least that's how it worked in the "Emerald Dawn" comics - we'll see how Martin Campbell does it.
