We all know that Mark Hamill was in a car wreck that slightly disfigured his face just after filming A New Hope. We also know that Lucas explained Luke's altered appearance by having a Wampa maul Luke's face at the beginning of The Empire Strikes Back.

But it has never sat well with Lucas that his farm boy hero archetype lost some of his facial innocence. When the technology finally becomes available, Lucas will restore Luke's face to its former perfect glory, and Luke will no longer appear suitably weathered and aged by his difficult trials.

Once Lucas realizes he can do this, he'll go one step further and make Luke look more like Hayden Christensen. Leia, too.
