Bloody Disgusting has word that several new "I-Horror," or Indian Horror films, are in the pipeline for international distribution. While the press release that they quote isn't very forthcoming in plot details, they do mention a few titles:
"First up will be The Accident, currently in post, starring Shiney Ahuja and Soha Ali Khan, directed by Abhijeet Chowdhury, whose debut film The Underground Chamber won India's national award for best first film in 2003...Two more I-Horror titles The Pilgrim Express, directed by Sanjay Khanduri, and Of Brothers and Sisters, by Kushan Nandy are due to go into production shortly."
What separates "I-Horror" from, say, "J-Horror" thematically is the films focus on domestic discord. Most Bollywood films are fixated with maintaining the family unit. Even Krrish, one of the first big Bollywood superhero movies, centered around our hero's family. There's no loner in the night here, just a man, his mama and their extended fam.
As far as I know, the last I-Horror title to be released States-side was 13B, a ghost story that showed eerily prophetic predictions of the future to a family through their favorite day-time soap opera. Within the milieu of the typical family-oriented Bollywood film, 13B was a breath of fresh air as it was more than a little sexually suggestive and hinted at strife within the family that wasn't entirely resolved by the time the end credits rolled around. It's exciting to see that kind of transgressive cinema makes its way here States-side and look forward to checking it out. If you're curious, and I know you are, check out 13B; it's streaming legally for free via Hulu.
