Hornets and Airbenders Across the Third Dimension

3D conversion claims two more victims with The Last Airbender and The Green Hornet.

Sigh. That's the sound I think we're going to be hearing a lot more of in the days to come when every single film that could possibly squeeze a few extra dollars out of the conversion announces their plans to go 3D

Today revealed that both The Last Airbender (per Deadline New York) and The Green Hornet (per /Film) will be post-converted for release in 3D. This doesn't affect The Last Airbender's release in the slightest, still shooting for its July 2nd date, but Hornet will be pushed into 2011 to accommodate the update.

Interestingly, both films are coming from very visual directors and it's too bad there's no way to ever really know if the 3D is something they're legitimately embracing or if it comes down as a studio mandate. Strangely, I have an easier time imagining Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind being enjoyable in 3D as opposed to, say, The Happening

The biggest hurtle for converted 3D to overcome is going to be the universally panned Clash of the Titans approach. It may have paid off in the short term, but it's not going to be too long before moviegoers start to catch on in regard to what 3D actually works and what just sort of makes your eyes hurt.

Adding to the situation is the issue of movie theater screens, with only a certain percentage able to display the stereoscopic effect. Given the onslaught of 3D we're currently going through, that percentage is going to go way, way up in the very near future, but it's still probably a big part of Hornet jumping clear into the next year.
