Karen Allen in Scrooged
One big, fat inside joke, Scrooged (1988) has nonetheless managed to become essential Christmas Eve viewing for some. There really isn't one ounce of real human emotion in this dark, rather confused and often obnoxious take on A Christmas Carol, which features Bill Murray being repeatedly punched in the face by Carol Kane, Bobcat Goldthwait as a disgruntled ex-employee looking to assassinate Murray and even Robert Goulet being stalked by alligators in a swamp. However, Karen Allen is on hand to provide at least a little heart and soul as the true love that Murray let go in favor of his career as a high-powered TV executive - her effortless charm and winning smile provide welcome relief to all of the out-of-control special effects, clumsy shenanigans, Murray's endless mugging and director Richard Donner not really knowing what the hell is going on - and apparently not really caring.
