Devils & Demons: Games

Hell shows up in a number of video games. These are the best of the demon-filled games.

The only thing better to fight in video games than space aliens are the hordes of Hell. Killing devils and demons can be a rewarding and enriching experience, because there is usually no doubt about their intentions - they want to spread evil wherever they go and stopping their nefarious endeavors is something even your mother can be proud of. Within these pages you'll be accosted by the imps from Doom II, meet the friendly Glottis from Grim Fandango, go face to face with Diablo, gape at the might of the towering Infernals from the world of Warcraft and get transported back to the early '80s to witness the most horrific of horrors, the Demon Attack. Load up your BFG and follow us into video game Hell.

Grim Fandango

Most demons are fiery, evil beasts that would just as soon impale your soul on their thorny, hellish sword as look at you, but there does exist the occasional demon worth befriending. Glottis is just such a creature. Enormous and orange, he's first met by Manny Calavera in the Department of Death garage, where he's engaging in his favorite activity - working on something mechanical. From that point on, he becomes our protagonist's best friend and constant companion on his four-year journey through the Land of the Dead, performing marvelous feats of engineering (let's see YOU build a rocket sled out of spare parts), succumbing to a serious gambling problem and even ripping his heart out of his chest out of sheer despair. But, in the end, he helps Manny - and the player - save the Land of the Dead from a nefarious plot to unjustly reward rich souls and becomes a hero. If we have to spend the afterlife with any demon, Glottis is our pick.

Warcraft

They come from the sky in pale-green balls of fire and rage, and the lands of Azeroth shudder when one of them walks the world of man. These powerful demons are summoned by warlocks in both the third Warcraft RTS and the Worlds of Warcraft MMORPG. Only the most powerful warlocks can call these warriors of the Burning Legion into servitude, but once an Infernal is summoned, death and destruction follow in his fiery wake.

Infernals are massive in size, towering over the tallest of Taurens. Their body is comprised of swirling, glowing waves of ultra-green energy seemingly held together by plates of armor made from unearthly metals. Their fists can smash through rock like a beggar's tooth through a hunk of warm cheese and their attacks are infused with the unholy fires of their dark and twisted souls. Easily one of the most powerful beings of the Warcraft universe, the Burning Legion is a force to be reckoned with.

Hellgate: London

Bill Roper brought us one of the most memorable demons in video gaming history when he took part in the creation of Diablo while at Blizzard. Now, in his new position as head of Flagship Studios, he's continuing his association with the demonic in the action/RPG title Hellgate: London. Set in a future England, the game offers up a scenario in which the denizens of Hell have won. Rising up out of the fiery pit and overrunning mankind's conventional forces, the demons have overrun the Earth and now have freee reign to run around pursuing all kinds of demonic hobbies like stamp collecting and birdwatching....er, EVIL stamp collecting and SATANIC birdwatching. Yeah!

Anyhoo, it's up to players to take up arms as the last of the human resistance and try to push these evil bastards back into Hell. As such, you get plenty of opportunities to go up against the foulest fiends the pit has to offer, utilizing magic, science and good, old-fashioned medieval weapons to slice and dice your way to victory. Still, it's a long row to hoe from refugee in a demon-infested world. Pack a lunch.
