I am a full-grown man, dammit - a responsible
adult, an emotional rock - and every time I hear Michael Giacchino's score for Up, I get weepy like a school-girl. Admittedly,
while I think that Giacchino is an incredibly talented composer, I generally
think that many of his scores sound oddly the same, as if stringed instruments
were the only way to convey suspense. Despite all that, I still well-up whenever those three or four piano notes start playing. The
first ten minutes of Up were when
Giacchino reached another level in my consideration.
So it's hardly any surprise to discover, as
reported today by SlashFlim, that Giacchino has been hired by director Andrew
Stanton to score John Carter of Mars for Pixar. This'll be the latest of many collaborations between the composer
and the studio since Giacchino provided the score for Ratatouille, The Incredibles and a number of the Pixar's short
films. John Carter will also mark the
studio's first feature-length, live-action release, and so long as Giacchino
can avoid wailing on a cello any time that John's in trouble, I'll be anxiously
awaiting both the film and his score.
