The trailer for the apocalyptic science fiction-action movie Doomsday is now up on Yahoo. Aside from the poor resolution to the trailer's quality (let's get into 2008 technology you Yahoo engineers), this is your first opportunity to suss out a feeling for director/writer Neil Marshall's next film. Remember, this is the guy that brought us Dog Soldiers, a better-than-average werewolf movie and The Descent, girl power against subterranean cave dwellers. Marshall has shown us that he's got potential to take an interesting genre concept, twist it around in his hands like a Rubik's Cube and hand us an entertaining movie to watch. So he must be doing the same for Doomsday, right?

Uhm....

Look, it's hard to get a true sense of a film in two minutes and twenty-four seconds but this trailer for Doomsday leaves me pretty non-plussed. First it starts out all 28 Days Later (instead of England being the center of the infection it's Scotland!), then it sort of transforms into Escape From New York except we've got a babe (Rhona Mitra) instead of an eyepatch-wearing Kurt Russell, and finally in the last 30 seconds the trailer goes completely Road Warrior on us. I mean, literally, it looks like The Road Warrior except the bad guys have Scottish accents. They're dressed like punk rocker-meets-hockey enforcer, they have mohawks and wear eyeshadow and they get in car chases (in what I might add is the trailer's only moments where there is sunshine.)

In short, the Doomsday trailer looks like three movies that you've probably seen before. This is not a good sign for me. Is it just me, am I too jaded and old or did anyone else get the "been there, done that" vibe from this thing too?
