The Further Adventures of Sulu

Sulu is the deboniar, fencing, huey-flying, botany-loving helmsman of the Enterprise.  Well rounded?   Yes, but his accomplishments during his stint on the Enterprise and after are often overshadowed by those of his legendary crew members.

What's in a Name?

Love for Sulu.

Sulu was born in San Francisco, California in 2237 and according to the Star Trek novel, The Entropy Effect, he was named after a character in the Japanese novel, The Tale of Genji. The name means light in Japanese, which is exactly what Sulu was on the Enterprise. A light, a shining beacon of professionalism, skill and dependability at the helm of Earth's greatest starship.

Sulu's Daughter - Demora Sulu

Helms run in the family.

In Star Trek: Generatrions we meet the daughter that will carry on the Sulu name. While the identity of the mother for this daughter is contradicted by several sources, one thing is for sure, she is a chip off the old block. During her career at Starfleet she was at the helm of the USS Enterprise (Captain Harriman's NCC-1701-B), the same position her father held.

While serving in this capacity she happened to meet Captain Kirk and mentioned to him that her father told her some interesting stories. I bet each one of those stories was about how her father was actually supposed to be a Captain in Star Trek IV, if it weren't for a certain camera hog.

Evil Sulu

How can I tell he is evil if he doesn't have a goatee?

In the Star Trek Original Series episode Mirror, Mirror we are shown a universe inhabited by evil versions of our favorite Trek characters. It is a well cited episode in pop culture and it established the goatee Spock wore as an international symbol of evil. However, Sulu's contribution in this episode to evil doppelgangers identification should not be overlooked. Evil Sulu, looks almost exactly like the normal Sulu, except he has a wicked looking scar on the side of his face. I contend that the scar should replace the goatee as the universal symbol of evil, because unlike goateed Spock, scarred Sulu really was evil. Watch the episode.

Sulu, Master of Magic

Finally a smart use of magic.

In the Star Trek the Animated Series' episode The Magicks of the Megas-Tu (canon level still under dispute), the crew of the Enterprise enter an area of space where they can perform magic. While other members of the crew waste their energies moving Vulcan chess pieces around, Sulu cuts right to the chase and makes himself a magical woman. If I was on the ship during that mission, I would be sitting on a captain's chair made of cheeseburgers watching Foxy Boxing.

No wonder I never got that Starfleet commission.
