Further Adventures of Captain Pike

This officer's seen a lot more of the universe then his short Original Series stint.

Captain Pike is a mysterious figure who is sewn into the Trek Universe like a golden thread. In The Original Series he seems to be a pretty good captain.  Yet, just as we were introduced to Pike, he is taken away from us and sent to live his life on the illusionary-laden planet Talos IV (the only planet that Starfleet barred by penalty of death).  Lucky for us though, secondary sources more then adequately fill in the gaps of Pike knowledge.

These are the further adventures of the man named Christopher R. Pike...

Poor Chair Design

Blink once for yes, twice for no.

In the J.J. Abrams' film, we see Pike in a wheelchair. This is a nod to his appearance as a TOS Fleet Captain badly injured by a warp core accident. The matter/anti-matter disruption unleashed a wave of delta radiation upon the still green crew. Pike stayed behind helping the trainees, but the damage he sustained was irreparable, binding him to a wheelchair, unable to move or speak. He would appear as a broken and scarred man in TOS Episodes The Menagerie Parts 1 and 2.

The wheelchair, which resembled a storage bin with the top cut out for his head and shoulders to poke through, was somehow tied into his brain waves so he could use thought to cause a simple light to blink. Gotta love the Trek. Travel faster than the speed of light? No problem. A speech synthesizer for Pike? I'm a doctor Jim, not some sort of 20th century computer scientist!
