What's in a Name?

People who are fans of the Evil Dead movies may be surprised to know that the full name of the character played by Bruce Campbell is Ashley J. Williams. Creator Sam Raimi did not concoct the name until the 3rd film, Army of Darkness, and even then did not use it directly in the movie. Instead the name was popularized in the Evil Dead/Army of Darkness video games and comics.
Why did they use the name Ash to begin with? Raimi thought it would be a clever reference to the character’s fate at the end of Evil Dead. While Campbell, in perfect Ash fashion, has said the name is short for ash-hole.
Ash-hole? Should be more like ash-kicking or Fant-ash-stic or Ash-mazing. Err, okay I will stop that now.
