Podrace - Star Wars: Episode I The Phantom Menace
Quick - what's Jake Lloyd doing right now? Answer, he's in college in Illinois studying film. Which means he's watching a lot of great movies and great cinema performances. Poor guy. Say what you will about young Mr. Lloyd's thespian chops back in 1999, The Phantom Menace wasn't all that bad. It had Darth Maul and it had the podrace.
Prima facie a podrace is just a chariot race or car race (see Ben-Hur or Grease) wherein the opponents have little compunction about bashing into one another.
