"I turn to stone, when you are gone, I turn to stone"

Did ELO write those lyrics for Bryce Dallas Howard? In the genius masterwork that was Spider-Man 3 they planted some seeds for what could have been a nifty triangle between Spidey, Mary Jane and Gwen Stacy. Howard even told MTV a few years ago, "Whether or not Gwen Stacy comes back, I mean, I wish it was up to me, but it's not. But yes, if they'd call me, I'd be there in a heart beat."

So let's have a moment of silence for Howard's hopes and dreams...

Emma Stone has been cast as Gwen Stacy in the reboot of Spider-Man. Damn, son. The gorgeous comedienne who brought some pizazz into the lives of Jonah Hill and Jesse Eisenberg will now be the love interest of Andrew Garfield's Peter Parker in the lower-budget Marc Webb retooling of Sam Raimi's high-flying insanity.

The announcement was made via a Sony press release, seen here on Bigfanboy. Here's a quote from Webb:

"The chemistry between Andrew and Emma was stunning and made Emma the clear choice. At the heart of the story of Peter Parker is not only the amazing Spider-Man, but also an ordinary teenager who is wondering what he has to do to get the girl. Andrew and Emma will bring everything audiences expect to these roles, but also make them their own. Much to my surprise, it was fun to find out that our choice for Gwen (Emma) is also a natural blonde."

We talked up her potential casting a few weeks ago, and there is still no word on who will be playing Mary Jane. The film is still on track for a 2012 release.
