You know all about Django Unchained, right? Well, if not, you should go check out our run-down on the currently-in-development flick. Don't worry, we'll wait. All set? All right then...
Word has come out that none other than former teen idol Leonardo DiCaprio is in talks to appear in Quentin Tarantino's next movie as the villainous Calvin Candie. The character runs a club/plantation in the deep south known as Candyland, where white patrons can exploit black women and watch black men fight one another to the death. So, kind of like Cheers but, you know, heinously racist. Candie is meant to be a major antagonist for the film's title character, a role that was originally said to possibly be going to Will Smith. That's looking increasingly less likely, however, which is absolutely fine with us, because it Django should be played by Idris Elba anyway.
Just LOOK at this guy for crying out loud.
Such a stark, despicable role might seem an odd choice for DiCaprio, but the villain of Tarantino's last movie, Christoph Waltz, ended up winning an Oscar for his performance, so it could turn into a very interesting thing for the actor's career. Interestingly, DiCaprio was considered for the role played by Waltz in Inglourious Basterds, but lost out reportedly because Tarantino wanted someone who could speak German. Both Waltz and frequent Tarantino collaborator Samuel L. Jackson are expected to appear in Django Unchained, but very little about the film is locked down as of now.
