It seems like the casting choice we all knew (and hoped) was coming has been reported online by MSN NEWS Latin America.
An AICN reader translates the news as, "Actor Johnny Depp was chosen to play "Mad Hatter" in Tim Burton's version of "Alice in Wonderland". Burton was hired by Disney studios to make the 3D version of Lewis Carroll's classic. Depp is the second confirmed cast member. Australian Mia Wasikowska will play Alice."
No word yet on who Helena Bonham Carter will play. I just hope Danny Elfman is brought on to do for Alice what he did for Burton's Chocolate Factory - as Elfman beat all the odds and allowed for a successful reinvention of the Oompa Loompas mostly due to his instantly classic melodies.
While I'm sure Burton's take on Alice will be nothing short of awesome, I doubt it can ever top my personal favorite version of the tale, the 1976 classic Bud Townsend X-rated musical starring Kristine DeBell which features a soundtrack far better than you'd ever expect.
