If you don't like The
State or aren't a fan of Wet Hot
American Summer, please know that while you're welcome to continue
frequenting UGO, we all hate you here...With that out of the way, however, we're
excited to read today that writer/director/comedian David Wain is considering
an adaptation of Alex Robinson's graphic novel Too
Cool to Be Forgotten. You should recognize Wain as the director of the
recent Paul Rudd comedy Role Models -
as well as a key contributor to the comedy group Stella, alongside Michael
Showalter and Michael Ian Black.
The story revolves around a man who attends a hypnosis
session to quit smoking only to wake up back in high-school in 1985. And while,
yes, that's essentially the plot of Hot
Tub Time Machine, we're fairly confident that Wain could possibly make that concept even funnier...
According to filmsite Pajiba, the film will be produced by
Anthony Bregman (Eternal Sunshine of the
Spotless Mind), who "discussed both the possibilities of using a Michael
Cera type and aging him up, or using an older Vince Vaughn type and putting him
in teenager's clothes circa 1985. With David Wain aboard, it seems that a guy
like Paul Rudd would be the most likely choice, given his connection to The
State guys and Wet Hot American Summer. But then, Wain has a lot of folks he works with regularly, so any number of
those are possibilities."
UGO has some deep connections to the world of heartfelt graphic novels, however, so we put the call in to author Alex Robinson himself. A-Rob says, "As far as I know [the production company] is trying to come up with the right creative team at this stage. I can't really confirm or deny David Wain's involvement since I honestly don't know. I've enjoyed his stuff so it would be great if that worked out."
Stick with UGO on this story as more develops.
