It seems like there have always been rumors about whether or not Wes Craven would make a fourth entry in the Scream franchise, the slasher homage/parody series that made the phrase “Do you like scary movies?” and that mask (picture to the right) pop cornerstones of the '90s. Craven has always vacillated around the idea, never fully committing...but never really saying “never” either.

Well, now it’s official: there will be a Scream 4 and Craven will be directing it. According to Dread Central, Kevin Williamson, screenwriter of Scream and Scream 2 as well as recent episodes of The Vampire Diaries, will return to script the film and Neve Campbell, David Arquette and Courtney Cox Arquette are expected to reprise their roles.

To be honest, my memory of the Scream movies are more than a bit hazy but I do remember just how much they meant to me, growing up in the '90s as I did. I don’t remember the films themselves very well but I do remember that they were some of the first horror movies that made me excited enough to pursue other and, more importantly, older films.

While many hold Craven’s earlier films, like Nightmare on Elm Street, The Hills Have Eyes or The Last House on the Left, as his most significant films, the Scream movies have always meant more to me for the role the played in my genre film addiction. I blame you, Wes Craven, I mean, thank you.

Are they worth a rewatch? Is Scream 4 something you’re looking forward to?
