Rob had his going away party a day early. It was tonight! And it was hosted by Myspace! I bet you couldn't have guessed that from any of the Cloverfield trailers. Anyway, I was invited and I brought my camera along to record the whole thing. I mean, Rob was moving to JAPAN, so I figured I should get a picture of us together before he left. The party was held at a club on Manhattan's Lower East Side, and 200 lucky Myspace sweepstakes winners and their friends were in attendance. For about a half an hour. Find out what happened after the jump.
The party started at 10 and I arrived at the not-entirely-fashionably-late hour of 10:30. It was raining, and there was a cop standing at the entrance to the building. I asked him if this was the place and he said yes and I thought "what a nice cop, just waiting here to give me directions". A few minutes later, I learned what he was really there for as he led the fire marshal inside past all of us waiting in line. Yes, Rob's friends had exceeded the space's capacity and several men in uniform were waving flashlights and insisting that we move along because no one else was going to be let in. I thought maybe this was just part of some staged event, but then Rob (Michael Stahl-David) emerged from the packed crowd inside, waved to a friend up on the sidewalk, and skipped off across the street to a fish restaurant. The rest of us were handed tickets for a midnight screening of Cloverfield around the corner. I didn't get a picture or a glimpse of Lizzy Caplan or even a free drink.
At the screening, I learned that people from all over the country had entered the sweepstakes, and had traveled from places like Philadelphia and Las Vegas to attend the party. For a half an hour. And there I was complaining about having to walk a few blocks in the rain! These people had come a long way so I guess I was glad that once midnight rolled around the movie started and we all got to see the party that could have been. In a loft, with beer and food and an annoying videographer. I noticed that they had been playing the same music at the club party that was playing at the movie party so I wasn't surprised that once the screening was over we were all handed a CD of "Rob's Party Mix" as we made our way out of the theater. Also, some Myspace pins.
From the CD, I've learned that Marlena lives in Brooklyn, and her number is 718-655-0542 (at least I think it's a 5; that one number is carefully blurred). Also, Lily or whoever put this mix together (maybe it was Marlena? I mean, she looks like the kind of girl who's into Of Montreal and Ratatat.) has trouble spelling "Parliament". I haven't listened yet to see if there are any hidden messages on the CD, but I'll make someone do that tomorrow.
Here's our Cloverfield review.
And here's a second opinion review.
