Who declared it Marvel Universe week on the internet? These days, you can't click twice without bumping into news (example: yesterday's Twitter meltdown after the annoucnement of Joss Whedon directing The Avengers). I'm not complaining, I just haven't heard a good Batman 3 casting rumor in awhile!
According to THR's Heat Vision Blog, Hayley Atwell, recently seen in AMC's The Prisoner remake, has been cast as Captain America's love interest Peggy Carter. It's great casting - a semi-unknown, who has displayed her acting chops in her previous work, and, maybe this is just me, isn't too bad on the eyes. Atwell beat out some tough competition, including She's Out of My League's Alice Eve, Kiera Knightley and Emily Blunt. Apparently my fan pick of Olympia Dukakis as an elderly Peggy wasn't even considered. Someday...
In the comics, Peggy was both Captain America's girlfriend and a member of the French Resistance, meaning we should see Atwell drop a few Nazis before the credits roll. The sad part: it may be a one-off for the actress, as Peggy wouldn't make it past the WWII-portion of the film, since Captain is expected to be frozen and resuscitated in present day.
Here's hoping everyone takes notice of her!
The First Avenger: Captain America shoots this summer for a July 2011 release, and stars the quick-witted Chris Evans as The Cap, Sebastian Stan as Bucky, and Hugo Weaving as The Red Skull.
Was Hayley the best choice for the role, or is there an even better Peggy Carter hidden under a rock somewhere? How pissed off is Bernie Rosenthal going to be? Let us know in the comments!![]()
