“I’m heading to the set of Battleship,” I’d say when asked why I was going to Honolulu. Whether it was our summer intern or my Great Aunt (ages 8 to 80?) the response was the same – “Battleship? You mean - 'You Sunk My Battleship' Battleship?”
Yes, it’s true, they’re making a movie from “You Sunk My Battleship,” but I’d also like to point out they (in this case Hasbro) have also made three modestly successful movies about interplanetary robots who can change into cars and trucks, so maybe they know what they’re doing.
After my twelve hour Mai Tai-soaked flight, producers Sarah Aubrey, Scott Stuber and Bennett Schneir greeted a group of international journalists with pastries, freshly squeezed tropical juices and shirtless natives to fan us and throw rose petals beneath our feet.
By now you’ve seen the Battleship trailer, so you know that Peter Berg hasn’t assembled Alexander Skarsgard, Taylor Kitsch, Brooklyn Decker, Rihanna and Liam Neeson to sit in a wood paneled basement to shout letters and numbers at one another - although, if David Lynch were doing that, it would be brilliant. Battleship is an action-adventure tale blending genuine cutting edge military tech and fantastical science-fiction elements. And we got a sweet first look at what this movie is going to look like.
Press on to learn what went down in the art room and on the Pearl Harbor set, as well as to hear from the cast.
