The minds at Silicon Knights are keeping many details about Too Human's story under wraps until the game releases - understandably, because an epic RPG almost ten years in the making is going to stand and fall on the strength of its narrative. We'll fill you in on what we do know, and then the rest is up to you.
Too Human takes place in the ancient past, where the world's developing civilizations were protected by a group of cybernetically enhanced humans known as the Aesir. These men, who are remembered in legends as the Norse gods of Asgard, were actually powerful half-robotic warriors charged with defending the world of men against a horde of rapacious mechanical marauders who are fueled by human flesh and blood. Ironically, as the Aesir transform their bodies into machines to defend humanity, they become more and more like their inhuman foes.
Using a portal called Yggdrasil to communicate with a mysterious world known as Cyberspace, the Aesir extract technology and energy to enhance their battle capabilities. Some Aesir embrace these gifts more fully than others - Baldur's older brother Thor has had over 95% of his body converted to cybernetics, for example. The adepts of Yggdrasil spend time in Cyberspace extracting the technology that keeps the Aesir immortal - without that mysterious realm, their kingdom would fall to their foes.
And who are these foes? They are led by Loki, a rogue son of ODIN who has been corrupted by his cybernetic influence, working with his daughter Hel to aid the forces of machine life that inhabit the Wastelands. The borders of these areas are continually encroaching upon the land of the humans, and only the intervention of the Aesir prevents them from overwhelming humanity entirely. Only small pockets of civilization remain, and even the immortal Aesir can't wage war forever.
