Street Fighter's Super Cameos

The release of Super Street Fighter IV has us reminiscing about our favorite Street Fighter cameos.

The Capcom fighting universe is something like Lost. Lives intertwine in the most bizarre of ways with characters and references appearing across a plethora of Capcom's games. Street Fighter, Final Fight, Darkstalkers and a few other odd series seem to overlap in a series of cameos and references throughout the Street Fighter series.

Here are just a few cameos and references we found in playing through some older Street Fighter games to prepare for the new Super Street Fighter IV. We've divided the cameos up by title, so you can quickly figure out who to look for and where to find them.

Street Fighter 2: The World Warriors

Ken’s Harbor Stage: Street Fighter III: 3rd Strike character Q allegedly makes an appearance. The guy that looks remarkably like Q is standing towards the front of the boat wearing Q’s trademark trench coat and hat and looking all ominous. He was removed from later versions of the game.

Zangief’s Ending: Former President of the Soviet Union Mikhail Gorbachev comes out to celebrate victory over M. Bison with a traditional Russian dance.

Ken’s Stage: A cruise ship birthday for his wife Eliza, people are dressed up as a variety of Capcom characters. It might not be the bonafide characters themselves,  but you have someone dressed up as Morrigan from Darkstalkers, some guys from Saturday Night Slam Masters (an arcade wrestling game), characters from Forgotten Worlds and Strider Hiryu from Strider.

Dhalsim’s Stage: Elena (Street Fighter III) appears lounging in the background.

Dan’s Stage: Fei Long hangs out in the background.

Guy's Stage: Basically every important Final Fight character is hanging out in the background. Haggar is flexing, Cody is looking cool and Hugo/Andore is trying not to look awkward.

Cody's Stage: Hugo/Andore makes yet another appearance in Cody's background, along with fellow bad guys Poison and Roxy.

Airfield Stage: As the plane on the runway lands and parks, the door opens to reveal Balrog/Vega/Sagat depending upon who is fighting.

Cruise Ship Stage: “Be in the Game” contest winner Paul Gale is in the background.

North America Stage: Hugo from Street Fighter III: 2nd Impact and 3rd Strike is seen in the background carrying a steel girder. You’ll notice him because he dwarfs the rest of his crew. Further in the background (and somewhat hard to see) is a statue of Metro City mayor Mike Haggar from sister series Final Fight. Haggar’s statue is holding the words “Metro City” over his head.

The Final Fight references keep on coming, with a billboard for Metro City appearing in the background of the car bonus stage.
