Red Dead Redemption has disregarded everything from it's past installment Red Dead Revolver. Keeping only the setting and a few select gameplay mechanics (Dead Eye slow-mo), the Red Dead franchise has gone under a complete overhaul in terms of gameplay. Without resorting to the typical, "bro it's totally Grand Theft Auto with horses", Red Dead Redemption has become an open world alive with the spirit of the wild west.
