Microsoft will produce a collection of anime shorts rooted in the Halo franchise, reports Ben Fritz over at the Los Angeles Times. The news is part of Fritz's broader story on video game companies producing their own films - without the help of Hollywood studios.

The Halo anime series, titled Halo Legends, will be developed in conjunction with 5 studios: Bones, Casio Entertainment, Production I.G., Studio4 C, and Toei Animation.

Shinji Aramaki, director of "Appleseed" and "Appleseed Ex Machina," will supervise the production and also direct one of the films. 343 Industries, Microsoft' everything-Halo studio, will guide these Spartan's of film making through the treacherous battlefield of development.
