The Playable History of Shooters

I realize that thirty-something is a bit early to start whining about getting old, but there's something about seeing the history of a whole genre compressed into a few minutes that makes for a definite sense of "man, my bones must be half dust by now." Genetos is like one of those evolutionary charts with a crude fish on the left and some jerk with a hands-free phone on the far right, except in this case it's diagraming the progression of shoot-em-up games from Space Invaders to Rez. Except not like that, because you're making crap blow up all over the place. I might have actually paid attention in Biology if that's how they'd taught it.

And for something that makes me feel a bit creaky in the joints, Genetos is really uplifting. Maybe it's the jumpy little trance number in the background, or the general sense of technological triumph and excitement about what's still over the horizon. Either way, it's a great way to re-experience the last quarter decade or so over the course of a lunch break.
