Games Within Games

The best games within games.

by Chris Plante

These are the best games within games. Not the best old games ported into new games. Nor the best games from mini-game collections. No, these are the bonus time wasters that designers toiled with on the side (or interns were tossed as a bone). These are those Easter eggs nestled in in-game arcades. These are the games that made you forget you were playing a game within another game.

Solitaire's included on every PC because it's a simple, fun way to teach computer newbies the basic skills to use a mouse in a virtual space. Gnat Attack, aka Coffee Break, does the same for SNES gamers eager to create a 16-bit masterpiece in Mario Paint.

With the mouse, the player controls a gloved hand with a fly swatter and takes out pesky bugs before they sting you. The game's broken into three levels with 100 bugs and a boss for each.

But the fun doesn't stop. After you beat the third boss, the game loops back to the first level, meaning infinite play sessions!
