Game publisher Acclaim Games has shut down
its online games and appears to be out of business. The company's website (as
spotted by Gamasutra)
says that "all Acclaim games will no longer be in service" effective
yesterday, August 26, and outlines ways that its former customers can
obtain reimbursements. Acclaim Games was born from the ashes of Acclaim Entertainment, a
well-known New York videogame publisher that operated from 1987 until
it was forced into Chapter 11 bankruptcy in 2004. The two companies had
little in common other than the name and logo; Acclaim Entertainment's
games and intellectual properties were purchased by other companies,
with most of them now in the hands of Throwback Entertainment. Acclaim Games was acquired by MySpace and Facebook game developer
Playdom earlier
this year. Just last month Playdom was acquired
by Disney. As noted by Gamasutra, the Acclaim-developed Facebook game Kogamu
is still alive, though any
reference to Acclaim has now been replaced by Playdom. Originally Published on 1UP.com.
