E3 2010 - The 10 Most Underrated Games of E3

Amidst the blockbuster titles announced at this year's E3, we take a look at the games that you might have missed.

A new Zelda, a Call of Duty challenger, and an emphasis on motion control might have your gamer brain scattered in every which way possible. Luckily for you, we here at UGO have nothing better to do than make note of every game at E3 2010. Here's some of the games we feel should've received more spotlight amongst the big name titles.

Silent Hill 8

Silent Hill: Homecoming received less than flattering reviews, being criticized for its action-oriented westernization of the once Konami-only published franchise. After Konami asked Climax Studios to develop Silent Hill: Origins, it took a chance with Double Helix to develop a Silent Hill for next-gen consoles. This would be the first console Silent Hill that wasn’t developed by Team Silent, and it left a disturbing taste in gamer’s mouths. And not the cool disturbing we’ve come to expect from Silent Hill games.

Konami, apparently happy with “average” scores it received with the Western developed Silent Hill, has once again taken a chance with another developer for Silent Hill 8, this time, Vatra Games. Hopefully this Czech studio can bring back Silent Hill to the gritty, disturbing game we all know and love.

The 3rd Birthday

It’s been 10 years since Aya Brea made an appearance in our games with her knack for sniffing out neo-mitochondrial creatures. The 3rd Birthday, which doesn’t have Parasite Eve in the title but puts an emphasis on the 3, is being called a “spin-off” of the franchise.

Animosity and silence surround the title’s story, but playing as Aya has been confirmed and the gameplay of the PSP exclusive title has been discussed and shown. The game has been changed to a 3rd person shooter, dropping the random encounters and other RPG elements, and Aya will be able to switch bodies with NPC characters on screen at will. An interesting mechanic that has Parasite Eve fans wondering what’s in store for the franchise.

Final Fantasy: 4 Heroes of Light

Final Fantasy has been extremely busy lately, with FF13’s release, the development of FF13 Versus and Agito, and the development of the new FF14 MMO. That isn’t to say there wasn’t time for an original DS game to be developed to be released this October.

4 Heroes of Light is being developed by Matrix Software, the studio behind the DS remakes of FF3 and 4, and is a completely new adventure. The game boasts character customization, a new battle system and a unique job system. The game did not make it in time for the 3DS, however, so don't plan on adventuring in 3D.

Shank

Shank

Klei Entertainment, the genius behind N+, is developing a 2D side-scrolling action game with over the top cartoon violence. Shank is about style and racking up your combos. Reminiscent of Devil May Cry, you can toss enemies in the air and juggle them with dual pistols and other firearms. Additionally, you can aim in multiple directions to protect your tender rump from all sides.

Shank is proving to be the most anticipated XBLA / PSN game to come out this Summer. Anything being written by God of War co-creator Marianne Krawczyk is sure to be a necessity.
