Doom 4 Wishlist

We list the features we'd like to see in Doom 4.

With the recent announcement that id Software has begun work on Doom 4, the latest installment in the franchise that basically made first-person shooters what they are today, our mouths reflexively started slavering. We've been with Doom from the beginning, battling our way through Carmack and Romero's early masterpiece before going online at LAN parties and discovering the joy of deathmatch for the first time. Several sequels followed, for a variety of platforms (including the Super NES, Atari Jaguar and more) as well as a series of novels and a big-budget movie starring The Rock. However, it's fair to say that the first next-gen installment, Doom 3, was sort of a disappointment, replacing the balls-out adrenaline of the early games with a slower-paced survival horror experience. With the sequel looming, we took some time to tell id exactly want we want to see - so get cracking, Carmack!

More Metal

One of the most memorable features of the first Doom games was the music, composed by id's in-house musician (x). However, maybe "composed" isn't the right word to use, as each track seemed to owe a debt to a thrash metal classics of the day. Yes, piping out of primitive SoundBlaster speakers was synthesized interpretations of tunes like Metallica's "No Remorse" and Judas Priest's "Leather Rebel." Doom 4 needs to bring back the heavy metal attitude of its predecessors, and what could be better than a soundtrack of today's most crushing artists? Imagine putting a bullet in an imp's head to the tune of Dragonforce or Strapping Young Lad? Violence and metal are one of the most classic combinations of all time, and need to make a serious return.
