David Jaffe was either silent or flat-out lying about Twisted Metal before E3, but now he's turned pretty chatty about the game. Kotaku culled some choice nuggets of info from his Twitter feed, giving us more insight into the upcoming car combat title.

"The stories and world and characters are very important to us, but the bread and butter is [multiplayer]," Jaffe wrote, "so made more sense to put much effort into the levels and design and modes and balance vs. tons of time making more and more factions that really don't affect play at all. And individual characters would not work in Team modes for us (i.e. factions easy to distinguish which team is which)." Local multiplayer, which Jaffe calls a "key aspect" of Twisted Metal, will also be included.

We knew about the Clowns and Dolls factions from Jaffe's E3 presentation, but he also mentions Skulls and Holy Men to round out the roster. Each vehicle will handle a driver and a gunner from one of the factions. He mentions the game "will not have 16 unique characters for each of the 16 vehicles."

In regards to the single-player story, he says we'll learn more about Calypso, but he'll stray from the darker tone of Twisted Metal Black. Jaffe says he "really didn't love that spin on [Calypso]." He calls the tone more creepy, like an "edgy Twilight Zone."

Jaffe also remarked on some features on his own wish list. "The plan is to toss debris and flip cars when a big ram occurs but it's not happening yet," he wrote. "We are hoping to support custom soundtracks but it's not for certain yet. Depends if we have time to hook it up." He also promises more details soon, and says he wants to have a panel at the San Diego Comic Con in a couple of weeks. We'll keep an eye out for more details coming out of that event.
