Cave Story began life as a free-to-play PC game, and it's
been kicking around the Internet for more than five years at this point.
Thus, chances are pretty good that most people who enjoy the classic
free-roaming sidescrollers of the 8-bit era have already played through
it on Windows, Mac, GP32X, or wherever else it's been ported to. If not,
well, Cave Story is readily available for download right this moment.
So why on earth would anyone in their right mind want to pay 12 bucks
to play the game on WiiWare? Well, for one thing, this is by far the definitive version of the game. It's been reworked, comprehensively,
from top to bottom, by its original creator, Daisuke "Pixel" Amaya. The
graphics have been redrawn with far more detail than was present in the
PC version, yet the game sacrifices none of its classic-influenced
charm. Pixel and publisher Nicalis have also built in a number of bonus
goodies, ranging from new difficulty modes, a boss rush, the ability to
play through as an alternate character, newly remixed music, and more.
And that's all on top of the original game, which is included complete
with its old graphics and sound.
