What It Is: Tactics
Ogre is the second game from director Yasumi Matsuno (Final Fantasy XII, Final
Fantasy Tactics, Vagrant Story).
The strategy-based JRPG lets you lead an army in a quest to liberate a nation. It's
both ground-breaking and old school, with a non-linear storyline, eight
different endings, and over a hundred hours of gameplay. On the downside, you
have to play as a boy named Denim.
Why It Is Neato: Quest's Ogre Battle series
is as close to Freddie Mercury: The
Tactical JRPG as you're ever going to get. The subtitle of this game is
taken from Queen's song "Teo Torriate (Let Us Cling Together)", a track from A Day at the Races that features two
verses sung entirely in Japanese. The first game in the series, Ogre Battle: March of the Black Queen, is named for two Queen songs: "Ogre
Battle" and "The March of the Black Queen." If you can believe it, this is only
the tip of the Queen reference iceberg.
Why Else It Is Neato: Square Enix announced that they'll
soon be giving us North Americans a chance to play Tactics Ogre without taking out a second mortgage on a house we
don't' even have anymore. An extravagantly updated port is currently in the
works for the PSP and set for a Spring 2011 release.
