The Starcraft 2 beta has everyone who got a beta key talking
about it constantly, and everyone who didn't, exercising the extraordinary
willpower necessary to not stab everyone who did. Meanwhile, a scrappy little
RTS just popped out that shares more than a little similarity with the moment's
object of obsession. It's got Marines, it's got bugs, it's got a lack of cow
levels, and it's got... graph paper.
Maybe you were that particular type of grade school dork who
was prone to drawing little space battles inside their trapper keeper. Or maybe
zombie battles. Or space zombie battles. Now imagine those scribbly little
marines came to life, set up defensive perimeters, installed siege cannons, and
leapfrogged squads into enemy territory while mowing down wave after wave of
evil flesh. Or evil colored pencil. Whatever. Even with upgradable weapons for
your marines, different types of autoturrets, grenades, and chemical weapons,
it'll still be a long push to break down and capture the enemy spawn points,
and it doesn't help that the monsters are always evolving new defenses and
methods of attack.
Anyway, it makes for a neat, bite sized real time strategy
game that takes a couple minutes to learn and potentially hours to really get
the hang of. At the very least, it'll give you something to do while you keep
rechecking your email to see if that beta key has arrived yet.
