Concept:
With the help of jellybeans, a boy and his blob, solve the mysteries of a strange land and stranger enemies. It's based on the original Boy and His Blob for the NES, which I imagine in turn is inspired by an acid trip.
Keep:
-The hugs. The hug is sort of a metaphor of all the game's charms. The hand-drawn art and the character design, the tossing of jelly-buttons and morphing of Blob, it's all so precious.
-The difficulty. Not nearly as difficult as it predecessor, Boy and His Blob is no walk in the spooky park. You still must overcome some tough enemies and wrap your mind around some tricky puzzles. That is to say, the devs haven't made a Wii friendly game; they've made a fan friendly game.
Correct:
-The controls. They're a little jittery. A couple times I found myself falling off a cliff or careening into a baddy when I thought I had hit the "do the thing I asked you to do" button. Instead, I must have hit the "instant death" button.
Cut:
-Don't cut, add. Switching things up here. If there's one thing this package needs, it's the addition of the original. I do not look forward to paying an additional 5 bucks to purchase Boy and the Blob NES on Virtual Console.
Conclusion:
The game's warm as a hug from a parent, but frustrating as that same parent's cumbersome rules. That is to say, it may be for children, but that doesn't mean it won't make a kid out of you.
