You might have heard of Bane, he has, technically, graced the silver screen in the often derided Batman and Robin. In that he is a mere convict given strength augmenting steroids. The true Bane, the comics Bane, is far more impressive. A mysterious figure that comes to Gotham for the sole purpose of defeating Batman, he sets up a series of trials to weaken the crusader (including a massive jail break at Arkhan Asylum), until their imminent confrontation. In their battle, Bane breaks Batman's back, and puts him in a wheelchair, causing the first time the mantle of the bat had to be passed on.
