Apple has traditionally taken pleasure in the sleek, clutter-free design of its own programs, but the addition of more advertisements to the App Store runs the risk of compromising the company's customarily minimalist approach to user experience.
Beginning on October 25, 2022, app-related advertisements will start to show up in the Today tab of the App Store as well as a new "You Might Also Like" section at the bottom of each listing for a specific app.
According to MacRumors(opens in new tab), Apple made the announcement in a recent email to developers and later stated on its website(opens in new tab) that customers of the App Store in other nations besides China will be impacted by the enhanced ad presence.
Ads in the App Store are only now available on the Search tab, but even here, they are frequently intrusive and frequently unrelated to the downloads that users are actually looking to make. Since App Store advertisements take up practically the whole first page of any search, less-than-impressive (read: lousy) apps are given more exposure than genuinely superior alternatives.
Additionally, under Apple's current ad system, businesses can purchase all available ad space for a particular ad name, giving their product a higher ranking than the listed app that people are seeking for. For instance, if you search "Temple Run," an advertisement for Run Bear Run will be the first app you find.
These advertisements will now show up in Search as well as the main Today tab of the App Store under the new arrangement. The Today tab is Apple's central location for editorial content, where App Store staff members handpick a selection of apps based on current trends and seasonal themes.
Although it appears that they will be given the same amount of space as editorialized sections on the Today tab, the ad in question will still be easily identified by a distinctive background and an obvious "Ad" icon (see the below example from Apple).
Announcing that these new advertising "will only contain content from apps' approved App Store product pages, and adhere to the same stringent privacy rules," Apple initially revealed plans to increase the amount of advertisements in the App Store back in July.
The action is probably going to open the door for such ad expansions in other Apple apps. According to earlier this year's Bloomberg report, Apple intends to almost increase its current yearly ad revenue to at least $10 billion.
Apple already has banner advertisements in its News and Stocks applications, but the company plans to introduce them in Apple Maps as early as 2023.
