"Flight for a Cure" Golf Classic

National Aviation Academy (NAA) is a proud supporter of JDRF. Over the past few years, NAA has raised funds by participating in sponsored walks and helping facilitate various charity events. We are proud to sponsor the third annual “Flight For A Cure” Golf Classic. With the addition of “Flight For A Cure”, NAA hopes to partner with several national and local organizations to raise over $40,000 in 2014. Teams of four players will be hitting the links at one of Tampa Bay’s most prestigious golf courses.

The day will also include a chance to meet Professional MLB outfielder Sam Fuld who was diagnosed with Type-1 Diabetes at age ten. Please mark your calendars and join us at this Fundraising event. Register a team HERE!

Tampa Bay | Melbourne High School JROTC Visit

On Friday, November 22, 2013, National Aviation Academy had the pleasure of hosting an Air Force JROTC group of 125 cadets and seven chaperones from Melbourne High School. The group visit was coordinated and led by retired Air Force Lt. Col. (R) Robin Athey, Senior Aerospace Instructor FL-011. Colonel Athey selected NAA for his annual field trip because NAA offers three programs of interest to his cadets: Aircraft Mechanics, Avionics and Professional Pilot Training. Special thanks goes out to the students for exhibiting such a professional demeanor while touring our facilities.

The group visited our main campus for a presentation led by our Senior Vice President George Nelson. Each group of students also visited NAA's Aviation Maintenance hangar and the Flight Training Device lab. Several Directors addressed the group as well as featuring their programs. Ken Fietz presented on Avionics training, Jeff Kuliga presented on Career Placement, and Mike Yocum discussed our Professional Pilot Training program.

To quote Colonel Athey, “It was a pleasure to visit National Aviation Academy, I believe the students had a really good time and learned a lot." Thanks to everyone who helped make this special visit happen. It was very rewarding for everyone at NAA to host this very important group.

New England | Graduation

Director of Education Paul Torpey speaks to the graduates on the importance
of personal integrity, and having pride in one’s work. (Photo: Jim McNeill)

On December 3rd, 2013, NAA - New England graduated a class of 17 students at the Hilton Garden Inn in Bedford, Massachusetts. Hundreds were in attendance to honor the graduates for the effort they put forth over the last 14 months. This effort could clearly be seen by the amount of gold cords being worn symbolizing the achievement of their A & P certifications. At the ceremony there was a total of 12 students with at least one certification and 7 had both Airframe and Power Plant.

Congratulations to Derek Dube for receiving the Top Mechanic award as voted on by his peers, and also Evan Tutill for receiving the FAA Award for earning the highest GPA of 98.05%. We congratulate the class of 912 and thank all of those who attended.

New Falcon 5X Bizjet is a Technological Tour-de-Force

When designing the cockpit of the 5X, Dassault started with the 7X as a base and took it a few steps further, paying particular attention to pilot comfort, which users will certainly appreciate in an airplane that can fly 11.5 hours or 5,200 nm.

Dassault Aviation launched its long-awaited, all-new Falcon 5X at last month’s NBAA show in Las Vegas. The long-range, advanced technology model should provoke strong interest among the growing Middle Eastern jet set.

The twin-engine, Mach 0.8, fly-by-wire business jet is powered by Snecma’s new Silvercrest engine, which, along with a new wing and flight controls, is a big part of the new aircraft’s leap forward in performance. The 5X is scheduled to fly before mid-2015, with certification and entry into service following in the first half of 2017.

The first batch of 40 standardized 5Xs will be fully equipped and priced at $45 million in today’s dollars, with Dassault (Stands 650/1445) indicating that it had taken some initial orders during the NBAA show. Three development aircraft will be built and aircraft number-one will be retained for future development work.

Technology, Rules Keep Amazon Drone Delivery in Hangar, For Now

(Reuters) - Amazon.com Inc Chief Executive Officer Jeff Bezos made a splash on Sunday with his radical plan to deliver goods to millions of its customers' doors by using a fleet of unmanned drones, but the bold vision is not likely to become a reality this decade.

By Bezos' own admission, the technology that would enable electric-powered 'octocopters' to fly to pre-programmed addresses unaided by humans is still early in development, and the United States is not likely to establish rules for civilian unmanned aircraft systems until 2015 at the earliest.

On top of that, the idea faces privacy concerns and was derided by some as merely a publicity stunt.

"I know this looks like science fiction. It's not," Bezos told Charlie Rose on CBS News' "60 Minutes" show on Sunday night, demonstrating video of a buzzing, toy-sized chopper delicately dropping a small package on a customer's patio.

NetJets Begins Installing New Tempus Medical Units

NetJets is installing the Tempus IC system–a lightweight device that connects cabin crew to ground medical facilities through the aircraft’s satellite telephone system–aboard its midsize and large-cabin fleet of business aircraft. According to a NetJets spokesperson, some of the company’s current in-service fleet of Bombardier Global 5000s and 6000s already have the Tempus equipment installed and an additional number of the fractional ownership provider’s Globals, as well as its Challenger 350s and 605s, are being fitted with the system.

Designed to make emergency communications between on-board personnel and medical facilities on the ground easier, the new units deliver real-time video, voice and clinical-grade vital signs, including diagnostic EKGs, as well as blood-pressure, pulse, temperature, blood-sugar, breath-gas, blood-oxygen and respiration levels. Tempus’s UK-based manufacturer, RDT, says the comprehensive technology is so simple a layperson can transmit a 12-lead electrocardiogram to MedAire medical support services on the ground. MedAire provides global medical training to NetJets crewmembers.

Spot Welding

(View Here)

A form of electrical resistance welding used for thin sheets of metal. The metal parts are assembled and clamped between the electrodes of the spot welding machine. A timed pulse of current flows between the electrodes and melts a spot of the metal. Pressure on the electrodes forces the molten metal from the two sheets together to form a single spot which joins the sheets. Fuel tanks can be welded with a continuous, leakproof seam by allowing the spots to overlap each other.
