The Louisiana Notary Procedures Act (R.S. 35:331-336) requires that a notary public hold a valid commission for a minimum of six (6) months before applying for the commission. Applications for renewals are to be filed at least six months prior to the expiration of the current commission, but not more than six months in advance. The expiration date is the six year anniversary of the notary’s appointment which is listed on their current commission certificate.

Former Gov. Bobby Jindal appointed Jennifer Sevigny (9714) and Walter Rolling Jr. (8592) as notary publics after their applications dated November 21, 2012 were filed with the Lieutenant Governor’s Office. The commission for Jennifer Sevigny expired November 21, 2018 and the commission for Walter Rolling Jr. expired on November 21, 2019. Their applications were filed on January 27, 2015 and were six (6) months from their expiration dates. By law their appointments were void. The appointments of Sevigny and Rolling were revoked due to improper appointment and notice was sent to them from the Records Division of the Lieutenant Governor’s Office by Certified Mail. Notaries who are attempting to renew their commission and are more than six months from their appointed expiration date are being informed that their application has been rejected. They are being asked to return an originally executed application and proper filing fees to the office and wait after their commission has been approved.
