The suitability standard does not require that the broker-dealer place his or her interests above the client's. It simply states that the broker must be able to believe that any recommendations made to the client are appropriate for them, given the client’s unique financial circumstances, goals, and other special circumstances. Another way to define suitability is making sure that transaction costs are reasonable and that the recommendations made are appropriate for the client. Excessive trading, churning of the account to generate more commissions and switching accounts assets frequently to generate transaction income are all examples that could be considered to be against suitability.

Fiduciaries will then have to decide on the best asset classes that they can use to create a well-diversified portfolio. The modern portfolio theory (MPT), which has been accepted as a standard method of creating investment portfolios with a desired risk/return profile is what most fiduciaries employ to do this.

The advisor should also ensure that trades are executed to the "best execution" standard. This is a requirement that they trade securities with the least cost and the most efficient execution.
Brokers do not have to disclose potential conflicts of interests. A suitable investment is sufficient, but does not necessarily have to match the objectives and profile of the investor.

It may appear that an investment fiduciary means a banker or money manager. However, an "investment fiduciary", in fact, is any person legally responsible for managing another's money.
A more generic example of fiduciary duty lies in the principal/agent relationship. Any individual person, corporation, partnership, or government agency can act as a principal or agent as long as the person or business has the legal capacity to do so. Under a principal/agent duty, an agent is legally appointed to act on behalf of the principal without conflict of interest.
