In March 2015, 100 marine scientists, alongwith theAustralian Marine SciencesAssociation, theAustralian Coral ReefSocietyand the SocietyforConservation Biologysigned a statement recognising the pristine nature ofthe Kimberley’s coastalwaters and calling foraworld-class network ofmarine sanctuaries to protect them.Tourism businesses have also supported increased protection. During the public consultations on the most recent marine parks at Roebuck Bay, HorizontalFalls and the North Kimberley, over50,000 submissionswere made calling forgreaterprotection, breaking allprevious records.The opportunitynowexists to complete the Great Kimberley Marine Park in the next term ofgovernment – a marine asset forWAthatwill rivalthe Great BarrierReef.
