s someone who’s wonGrammy
awardswithherband,Sugarland,
JenniferNettleswouldn’tneedanact-
ingcoach toplayacountry staronTV.
But in
Coat ofManyColors
, anNBC
movie airing thismonth that’s based
on theDollyParton songof the same
name,Nettles isn’t playing the iconic
singer; she’s playing Parton’smother,
Avie Lee. Still, all it took was one
meetingwithParton forNettles toget
into the character.
“In theconversation thatDollyand
I had, I said, ‘How in general would
you describe your mother?’”Nettles
recalls.
“Dolly said, ‘Iwill tell it toyou
thisway:Mymommawasmewithout
theglitter.’AndIthought, ‘OK,that’sall
youneed tosay!’”
Nettles,41,hadonlymet Parton in
passing at an event or two before she
signed on to
Coat ofManyColors
, but
she counts the 69-year-old singer/
songwriter as an influence who was
“everywhere”duringNettles’ childhood
in ruralGeorgia,and she immediately
connectedwith several aspects of the
film’s script, includingwhenAvieLee
sewsacoat for9-year-oldDollyoutof
cloth thatwasoriginallymeant tobea
babyblanket for an infantwhodied.
“Suchabigpartof themovie ishow
the family overcomes a huge tragedy
together through their faith,”Nettles
says.“Parton’smusicalbeginningshad
a foundation in the church.Thatwas
where I first sang in front of an audi-
ence, and I just loved that it was so
much a part of the fabric of their
family—not only the church,but also
themusic and what they drew from
that.”
