lying if I said that I’m ready for it— I absolutelyamnot. But luckily,
I dohaveabit of anedge since, technically, I’vebeengift shopping
since, oh, July. No, I’mnot someoverachieverwithapenchant for
completingmyholidaybuyingbefore I even carveapumpkin— rather,
I’vebeenprepping for this issue.
I’m sureyou’veheard thephrase, “Christmas in July,”but in
themagazine industry, thesewords takeonanentirelynewmeaning,
because this iswhen theplanning for our annual holidaygift guide
begins. Gift fairs areattended, lookbooks aregathered, samples are
requested, themes are chosenandessentiallyno stone is left unturned
inour quest to find the season’sbest gifts.
This year, aftermuchdeliberation,wedecided to focuson “Ultimate
LittleLuxuries” (page66). Thinkartfullyexquisitehomeaccents (likea
lushmarmot fur throw fromFendi), chicbaubles, scene-stealingacces-
sories andexquisitely craftedbespoke items (custom-blended cognac
fromTesseron, anyone?) that givenewmeaning to the concept of
personalization. Gift givingaside, ’tis the season for travel, aswell, and
inkeepingwithour festive theme,weoffer four trulyamazingholiday
escapes (page76) perfect for anyvacationpersonality— from thewinter
wonderlandof theSwissAlps to the sugar-white sandsofMustique.
Amidall the funand festivities, though,wemust not forget that this is
a time for thanks, for reflectionand forgivingback—which iswhyJoseph
Guinto’s story, “MissionAccomplished” (page51), about oneman’sdesire
tochange theworld throughcleanwater, is socompelling. In2006, Scott
Harrison felt, inhiswords, “morallybankrupt, spirituallybankrupt and
emotionallybankrupt,” sohe foundedCharity:Water,with themission
to sharecleandrinkingwaterwithasmanyof theworld’s800million
people inneedashecould. Today, Charity:Water is the largestU.S.water
charity, serving4.4millionpeople,withnearly 13,000waterprojects in22
countries. Clearly, forHarrison, it truly ismissionaccomplished.
