ECHNICALLYSPEAKING
,when it comes tonewbeginnings, the
monthof Januaryalways takesprecedencebecause itmarks the start
of anewcalendar year.April followsasaclose second, with spring,
chirpingbirdsand the first fragrant cherryblossomsheralding the
comingof summer. But forme,my favoritemonthof newbeginnings is
September, because itmarks thearrival of autumn—mypersonal favorite
timeof year, evenasachild.Of course, back then, itwasbecause I couldn’t
wait for school to start. Sure, I loved summer, but the thrill of shopping
fornew school supplies—crispnotebooks, color-coded file folders, pens
ineverycolor—and the joyof seeingallmy friendsagainmade it anoh
soexciting time. But as I grewolder, I foundplentyof other reasons to
loveautumn: cooler temperatures (I’macold-weathergirl atheart); the
anticipationof Thanksgivingand theupcomingholidays; eatingcaramel
applesat theStateFairof Texas; and, just aswhen Iwasachild, the thrill
of shopping fornew fall essentials—onlynow it’s fashionessentials rather
than school essentials. You see, I loveeverythingabout fall fashion (coats,
boots, scarves, hats), and I always invest inat least twoor threenewkey
pieceseach season.Decidingexactlywhich trends to invest incan
be tricky, though, so if you’re likemeandwant tobuywisely, turn to
page44
to seewhatmadeour listof fall requisites.
Speakingof trends, this isalsoour annual FoodandWine Issue, and
thisyear,we’reexploring thenew frontier ofAmericancuisine. Andwho
better todo thatwith thanacclaimedchef andTVpersonalityAnthony
Bourdain, who satdownwithus todiscusswhat he seesas thedefining
element inAmerican food today (
page52
).We’realso sharing fiveof the
country’smost unexpectedculinarydestinations—cities that onewould
never have thought of as fooddestinationsbut that today, with theafore-
mentionednew frontier ofAmericandining, are takingcenter stage
(
page60
).Wealso traveled to theother sideof theworld for amulti-
chef guided tour ofHongKong’sbest restaurants (
page68
) anddown
toSouthAmerica (
page74
) toexplore the lesser-known-but-no-less-
amazingwine regionsofBrazil,ArgentinaandChile.
Asyou read through themagazine, youmight noticeanew look, too.
That’sbecausewe spent our summergiving

anupdate.
We redidour front-of-the-book section (
page 13
),weadjusted the flow
of themagazine, andwe tweakedanumber of designelements tocreate
anoverall cohesive lookandvoice (thinkof it asanessential fall fashion
update). You’ll seeevenmorechangesover thenext few issues, but
for now,wehopeyou likewhatwe’vedone so far.
