Deutschland, and tomany, thatmeans heading
out among thebrew crew towardMunich’s
Oktoberfest.With all due respect to this
centuries-old celebration, we’d like to suggest
youdon your
dirndl
elsewhere. It’s not that we
have anything againstOktoberfest, but in a
country that boasts some 10,000 festivals an-
nually, it’dbe a shame tomiss out on thebest
of the rest.Here are a fewof our favorites:
1.DÜRKHEIMERWURSTMARKT
BADDURKHEIM,
Sept. 11-15 and 18-21
BadDurkheim, which turns 600next year, is
home toboth theworld’s largest winebarrel
and the largest wine festival.Wurstmarkt
may translate to “sausagemarket,” but wine
has always been the focus of this celebration,
featuringmore than 300wines on-site.
2.CANNSTATTERVOLKSFEST
STUTTGART,
Sept. 25-Oct. 11
Simply referred to as “Wasen” by locals, this
celebrationbegan in 1818 andnowhostsmore
than 3.5million festivalgoers.Here, you’ll find
aparade, amarket, food stands, roller coasters
andnativeGermans singing anddancing in
thebeer tents.What youwon’t find atWasen?
Swarms of tourists.
3.GERMANWINE-HARVESTFESTIVAL
NEUSTADT,
Sept. 25-Oct. 12
Locatedon theWeinstrasse (theGermanWine
Route), this age-old festival starts offwith a
“WineQueen” coronation ceremony. Then,
the vino starts flowingwithfirst-barrel samples
and tastings from the country’s 13wine-
growing regions. It alsoboastsGermany’s
largest wineparade, whichhasmore
than 130floats. –
